The Biden administration is planning to allow tens of thousands of Afghans brought to the U.S. after the Taliban takeover of their homeland to apply to stay and work in the country legally for at least another two years, as efforts in Congress to legalize them have stalled, four people familiar with the plan told CBS News.The decision by the Department of Homeland Security DHS will give Afghan evacuees an opportunity to renew their temporary work permits and protections from deportation under a humanitarian immigra stanley cup tion policy known as parole, which was used on a massive scale in 2021 and 2022 to resettle them.Eligible stanley cup Afghans will be allowed to submit an online application with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services USCIS to request a renewal of their parole classification, the sources said, requesting anonymity to discuss the policy decision before its public ann stanley cup ouncement. The agency, one of the sources said, is planning to start accepting renewal requests in June. USCIS will set up at least five support centers across the U.S. to connect Afghans with lawyers in the coming months so they can help evacuees apply for parole renewals and immigration benefits that grant them permanent legal status, such as asylum, the sources added. SPOKANE, Wash. ndash;- A 3-year-old who died in a house fire was found with his dog and teddy bear next to him and authorities believe the dog tried to protect the boy, a spokesman for Spokanersquo fire department said Sa af1 turday.The dog, a terrier mixed breed, also died in the fire that broke out at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, said the spokesman, Brian Schaeffer. Three other children and two adults escaped from the blaze in Spokanersquo Hillyard neighborhood, he said. The dog stayed behind in an attempt to protect the boy, firefighters believe, and the fire was so intense that salomon it melted the metal on the frame of the boyrsquo bed, Schaeffer said.Officials said firefighters arrived within minutes of the call and several people were able to escape from the home, including other young children, CBS affiliate KREM reports. Firefighters then found one child dead inside the home shortly after making entry. Officials said the home did not have working smoke detectors. Once the fire was put out, the Spokane Fire Departmentrsquo Special Investigative Unit as well as Spokane Police major crimes detectives responded to the scene.
