To commemorate the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Nicholas Thomas and more than 100 other volunteers will board up vacant houses, install school safety signs and make other improvements to a Detroit neighborhood. Their mission is to celebrate King s legacy by being good neighbors and helping lift up a primarily black school stanley cup in one of the poorer areas of the ci stanley cup ty.As Thomas fans out across the neighborhood with hammer and nails, King s legacy of peace and racial and social justice will be foremost in his mind. But at the same time, he s struggling to come to grips with the deep racial divisions roiling the nation under President Trump. Dr. King wanted unity. President Trump typically isn t one to be upstaged mdash; but that wasn t the case Thursday when rapper Kanye West launched into a monologue across from him in the Oval Office, leaving even Mr. Trump nearly speechless. That was quite something. That was quite something, Mr. Trump said.West was invited to the White House to have lunch with the president, former NFL star Jim Brown, and the president s yeezy son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner to discuss manufacturing, prison reform and gang violence. But West, launching into a more than 10-minute, profanity-infused soliloquy, talked about being mistakenly diagnosed as bipolar, about his family situation, and about his support for Mr. Trump, among other things.
